Daily Prompt: Choose Your Adventure

It was one of those days. We were in Kenya and my younger brother and I were having one of our infamous arguments. I don’t remember what started it, all I remember is that I screamed at him and said something like, “Why don’t you just go and not come back?”

What happened next was nearly unbelievable, partly because runaways were not usual in our family, partly because we were in a place that we visited for two months every year (i.e. we weren’t really familiar with the place), but mostly because my brother actually listened to me.

He went out and didn’t come back. Darkness fell and you can imagine the guilt that coursed through me as we were bunched up in my uncle’s car driving around the streets of Mombasa wondering where he would have gone to. We learnt earlier that he used to go into Matatus (ma3=minivan used for public transport) sometimes and stay in them as they made their rounds from one end to another. Which sorta explained why we were on the streets (even though I have to admit now it was not the most efficient use of our time)….
